What age to start early-teen class?

A good question because it’s usually in the balance as few of our Children’s classes still even have a young teen or two in them, by choice.

studioMAP provides art classes separately to children, pre-and early-teen and teen-only categories. The main point to know is that we bridge the whole range and we are flexible near the edges.

Early-Teen classes offer what the name implies so participants can mix with other early-teens (rather than teen only). The early teens classes ages range from 12-15 yrs old.

We offer flexibility in timing when it best suites the individual to choose which category and when to transition. Participants can be assured that if things don’t work out then returning to a category is made easy. Obviously this is a negotiable area. Some teens, although actually teen aged are better suited to a ‘children’s class’ because that has a mix of ages sometimes including early and pre-teens and that’s OK.

Sooner or later though, most teens prefer either an Early-teens class or a teen-only  class so we offer that too. If you are not sure please feel free to discuss this further.

What happens in Early-teen classes?

Group and individual demonstrations and technical issues are still practiced however each early teen student begins  a more tailored approach to learning that by teen-only class the student projects and the approach to art very self determined.

As the abilities and art skills vary much more as students get older, a greater emphasis is on more individually  specific – technical requirements.

At studioMAP all students, in all classes select their own art projects, based on their own interests, enquires and themes. We do assist this process when and as required. Projects usually go on for a few weeks depending on the style, approach, enjoyment and ability of the student. Early-Teen students begin to more seriously (than children’s classes) take-aim, develop and take more control of the processes of developing a visual art expression.

All Early-teen projects are supported with one-to-one assistance and still learn and apply our general curriculum known as  Art-with-a-Map. This curriculum process continues to gain deeper states and levels of application than the children’s classes.

studioMAP  supplies all the tuition, workshop access, all the basic materials;  like paper, cardboard, paints,  tools and many other basic mediums. Protective smocks/aprons and individual student storage is also supplied.

Early-teen classes include a short snack-break at about the mid-way point of class .(students supply their own snack/drinks etc).

studioMAP also offers a separate Illustration only workshop every Friday – suitable for children and some early Teens. Illustration class is wonderful class for early-teens who are ok with younger students around them and who wish to participate more in illustration in areas such as Poke-Art, Manga styles, cartoon and comic art as well as general and graphic illustration. However Early teen participants can also do this too, within the Early-teen classes. This  also includes  access to graphic tablets and digital screens.
