In addition to studioMAP’s weekly school term-based Painting and Drawing classes for children and teens,  studioMAP also provides  Illustration art – FRidays 3.30-5.30pm

What age to start?

Generally our youngest students begin from about 8 years old and range through to early-teens (12 -14), before moving into teen-only classes (15+) However all these requisites can be negotiated according to the participant’s art and social skills

Children’s illustration classes are designed for students-only participation (non Adult) however we understand some young students sometimes require an initially settling in period.  Grown-ups are not expected to remain beyond the settle in.

What happens in illustration class?

Illustration classes are based on graphic investigation in areas such as contemporary Japanese / Pokemon styles , Manga styles, cartoon and comic art as well as general and graphic illustration styles rather than (traditional) painting and drawing.

Materials used include pencils, acoloured marker pens, water-colour pencils and paints. Digital art is very popular and we have several Surface pros digital tablets and pens  Our aim here is to look at, introduce and research the vast array of contemporary illustration styles and techniques listed above. Participants here also practice and develop 2&3D models and model building projects. Yes its a very enjoyable workshop / class.

Technical skills development and problem-solving solutions regularly explained and practiced.

All students select their own illustration ‘main’ project themes and include subjects based on their own interests and enjoyment. Student projects usually have no specific time constraints and can even go on for a few weeks; the length differs depending on the style, approach and ability of each student. Like in the regular painting and drawing classes; illustration projects become not just the endpoint but the means of learning, enjoying and growing individual participation and skills.

studioMAP supplies all the tuition, workshop access, and all basic materials; like paper, high-quality drawing cardboard, paints, tools, digital tablets and many other mediums and use of studio equipment. Protective smocks/aprons (where required) and individual student storage is provided.

Classes include a short snack-break about halfway through the class (students supply their own snacks/drinks etc).

As students get older and closer to the early teen category we can assist with this simple transition process. All participants may proceed when they feel ready and/or ‘try-out’ the next step accordingly.
