In addition to studioMAP’s weekly school term-based Painting and Drawing or illutration classes for children and teens  studioMAP also provides a Portrait art classes.

What age to start?

Generally our youngest students begin from about six years old and range through to early-teens (12 -14), before moving into teen-only classes (15+) However all these requisites can be negotiated according to the participant’s art and social skills. The Portrait Class is recommended for 10 ~14 years old.

What happens in Portrait class?

These classes are based mainly on traditional painting and drawing however we open up other graphic investigation areas such as general graphic illustration styles and we support modern graphic interests including manga and anime styles.

Materials used include all pencils, a large range of coloured marker pens, water-colour pencils and watercolour paints. Painting mediums such as acrylic paint are explained and developed for portrait use.  Traditional formulae for portrait studies are taught with the aim to set up the basis for evolving individual styles and interpretation of portrait themes to suit the individual students. Art themes, styles and broader artistic expressions are regularly studied.

Group and individual demonstrations are given, with specific technical skills development and problem-solving solutions regularly explained and practiced.

Eventually, all students select their own portrait project themes and include subjects based on their own interests and enjoyment. Student projects usually have no specific time constraints and can even go on for several weeks. Like in the regular painting and drawing classes,  portrait projects become not just the endpoint but the means of learning, enjoying and growing individual talents and skills.

studioMAP supplies all the tuition, workshop access, all the basic materials; like paper, high-quality drawing cardboards, paints, tools and many other basic mediums. Protective smocks/aprons (where required) and individual student storage is provided. high-quality digital drawing pads are available.

Classes include a short snack break about halfway through each class. (students supply these)

Being part of an art centre, we also have access to regularly changing professional art exhibitions on view in 4-5 M16 Artspace galleries.

As students get older and closer to the teen-only(15yrs+) category, we can assist with a simple transition process. All participants may proceed when they feel ready and/or ‘try-out’ the next step accordingly.
